Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (ENA) – The Ethiopia and USAID signed on Thursday a grant agreement amounting to 229.3 million USD for the implementation of ongoing programs in Ethiopia.
Finance and Economic Development State Minister, Ahmed Shide, and Mission Director for USAID, H. Staal signed the agreement. The US Ambassador to Ethiopia, Donald Booth attended the signing ceremony.
During the signing ceremony it was noted that the accord has two main objectives.
The first objective of the accord works on health and education while the second objective focuses on accelerated agricultural based economic growth as a critical path way to prevent drought in Ethiopia.
Speaking on his part, Ahmed said the government of Ethiopia will make every effort to implement the strategic objectives as per the agreement.
He said so far, US assisted 393.6 million USD, 81 million and 49.34 million USD respectively to these objectives and in total 229.3 million USD additional assistance provided for the extended time.
Ahmed said there is a need of having medium term development framework agreement on development assistance.
USAID Mission Director, H. Staal on his part said USAID support for health, education, food security and economic growth in Ethiopia reaches 812 million USD in 2010.
He said bilateral agreements are the result of close consultation between the Governments of Ethiopia and the United States.
US Ambassador to Ethiopia, Donald Booth said through USAID the Centers for Disease Control and other agencies, the U.S. Government is working in cooperation with the Ethiopian Government to enable people to live and work with dignity and to achieve the prosperity they aspire to.
