In a race dedicated to nine-time winner and recent cancer victim Grete Waitz — a Norwegian who often ran away from her opposition and never relented — Mary Keitany attempted a similar approach but couldn’t close.
Leading by about a half-mile halfway through, an exhausted and cramping Keitany was caught by winner Firehiwot Dado and runner-up Buzunesh Deba, who spent most of the 26.2 miles chasing an overly aggressive Kenyan ghost.
