The incumbent Ethiopian government is exerting relentless efforts in making the upcoming national elections peaceful, free, fair, and democratic, the Government’s Communication Affairs Office disclosed.

Briefing local foreign journalists on current issues, the office reiterated that the government has been undertaking multifaceted activities geared toward conducting the coming national elections in a democratic and peaceful manner.

Office Deputy Head, Shimelis Kemal said formulating and implementing the free mass media airtime for contesting political parties by the joint council of the potilical parties is one of the main activities undertaken for the same goal.

He said the government formulated and granted financial assistance to contesting political parties from its own treasury in order to support the contesting political parties in their canvassing process has been realized for the first time in the history of the nation.

Shimelis said wide-ranging measures of the government taken to make the campaigning process of the national elections free and peaceful throughout the country are testimonials for government’s determination in making the elections free, fair, democratic, and credible on the part of the public.

However, he said, some neo liberal extremist forces have been disseminating disruptive and unfounded statements on the process of the national elections in a bid to discredit the democratic nature of the election process and to tarnish the positive image of the nation.

For instance, the deputy head said, the respective reports of the self-styled ‘Human Rights Watch’ and the US State Department for Foreign Affairs on the status of human rights in Ethiopia were indeed unacceptable. Hence, Shimelis said, the Ethiopian government was enforced to issue counterstatements against the abovementioned reports.
