Addis Ababa, April 8, 2010 – Ethiopia will participate in Expo 2010 Shanghai China to be held from May 1-October 31, 2010, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced here on Thursday.
Culture and Tourism Minister Ambassador Mohamoud Dirir said the country is undertaking preparations to take part in the Expo.
The Minister said a national organizing steering committee and an office for coordination of Ethiopia’s participation were formed in 2008 .
The objectives of Ethiopia’s participation are, among others, to build Ethiopia’s positive image through the promotion of its natural, historical and cultural heritages, trade and investment.
It is also aimed at drawing lessons from the best practices of the World Expo and popularize it at home.
The Minister said the theme of Expo Shanghai 2010 , “Better City, Better Life,” encourages Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts to fight against poverty.
Participation of Ethiopia in the Expo will further enhance existing friendship between Ethiopia and China, the minister said.
Charge d’ affaires of Chinese embassy in Ethiopia, Wei Hongtian on his part said the Expo will attract 70 million visitors.
Preparatory work of Ethiopian stand in Africa Joint Pavilion goes very smoothly under the support of the Ministry, Wei Hongtian said.
