Ethiopia omit Bekele from world cross-country squad

ADDIS ABABA (AFP) – Ethiopian distance star Kenenisa Bekele has officially been left out of Ethiopia’s squad for this weekend’s World Cross Championships in Poland, the Ethiopian athletics federation said Friday.
A 27-member squad left Addis Ababa on Thursday for Bydgoszcz, venue of the championship on Sunday, without the six-time world champion Bekele, who has failed to shake off a calf injury.
The 27-year-old sustained the injury while in training in January and speculation over his participation in Poland have intensified ever since. Bekele was tipped to clinch a record seventh victory.
The squad, is however led by the men’s defending champion Gebre-Egziabher Gebremariam and the women’s five-time world champion Tirunesh Dibaba.
