Ethiopia implementing successful strategy to fight against poverty: Meles

Addis Ababa, November 1, 2010 (ENA) – Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said Ethiopia has put in place successful strategy enabling the public to fight against poverty and become beneficiaries.

The Africa-China Poverty Reduction and Development Conference was opened here on Monday.

Meles said at the opening of the Conference that there are two development alternatives. The first alternative is increasing productivity and make beneficiaries pay tax so as to distribute the income among the public.

The second alternative is making the development fair and overall, he said, adding, Ethiopia is registering results through implementing the second alternative.

Meles said though the continent draws experiences from countries, which have registered rapid development, the key to Africa’s development is based on continent’s own policy.

The conference has been discussing on five main agendas .It has given due attention to ways how Africa speeds up development

Deputy PM and Foreign Affairs Minister Hailemariam Desalegn on his part said the conference created opportunity to discuss on poverty reduction policy

Zheng Wenkai, Deputy Director-General of the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development

on the occasion said Africa draws lesson from China’s poverty reduction strategy.

The Chinese government has a plan to repeat achievement registered in the economic sector in the social sector as well and create prosperous community in the year 2020.

Wenkai said China will provide the necessary support to the efforts to reduce poverty worldwide.
