Marking its 10th anniversary, the diaspora forum is set to honor an Ethiopian diplomat, Girma Birru, Ethiopia’s Ambassador the the United States, with an award as “Business Champion of the Year” for his efforts in supporting the diaspora, The Reporter learnt.
He will be awarded together with two individual entrepreneurs who have been recognized as “Pioneer Ethiopian Diaspora Business Persons of the year”.
Yohannes Assefa, executive director of the Ethiopian Diaspora Business Forum, told The Reporter that the awardees are set to receive a Californian carved statues next Wednesday at the Sheraton at a dinner ceremony. The event is taking place for the first time in ten years here in line with the diaspora week organized by the government. According to information The Reporter obtained from the organization, Tamrat Bekele and Akeza Teame (MD) are the two recipients of this year’s awards. However, Yohannes requested the name of the diplomat not to be disclosed as the latter is yet to confirm acceptance. However, The Reporter, has confirmed from reliable sources that Girma is expected to be the recipient of the award.
Tamrat, a father of five, is the founder and CEO of Medpharm Holdings Africa a parent company of International Clinical Laboratories. In 2003 he established Medpharm Inc in the US with his two partners to set up International Clinical Laboratories (ICL) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He moved back to Ethiopia in 2004 to start the operation and has established one of most successful health-care operations in the country. Currently, the laboratory stands as the first Joint Commission International Accredited Healthcare facility in the continent.
